You can use this basic formula:
Watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used × electricity rate = daily cost
For example, a 60-watt bulb used for five hours consumes:
60 ÷ 1,000 × 5 = 0.3 kilowatt-hours
If your electricity rate is 20 cents per kilowatt-hour, that bulb costs about 6 cents per day to operate.
An 8-watt LED bulb used for the same five hours consumes:
8 ÷ 1,000 × 5 = 0.04 kilowatt-hours

I prefer warm white in the living room because it feels comfortable in the evening. I use a more neutral tone above the kitchen counter, where I need to see food and tools clearly.
4. Check the fitting and shape
A bulb needs to match the lamp socket. Common fittings include screw bases and bayonet bases, depending on the country and fixture.
The bulb shape matters too. A globe bulb may suit an open pendant light. A narrow candle bulb may fit a small decorative fixture. A wide LED bulb can touch a shade or fail to fit inside a closed lamp.
I measure the available space before buying a replacement. This small step prevents heat buildup, shade damage, and a second trip to the store.
5. Check dimmer compatibility
Not every LED bulb works with every dimmer switch. A non-compatible bulb may flicker, buzz, or fail to dim smoothly.
I read the package for terms such as “dimmable” and check the dimmer manufacturer’s guidance when possible. If a fixture uses a smart switch, motion sensor, or timer, I also check whether the bulb supports that setup.
6. Look at the expected life
The package may list an estimated operating life, such as 10,000 or 15,000 hours. This figure is based on test conditions, so actual life can vary.
Heat, frequent switching, moisture, and poor ventilation may affect performance. I avoid placing a standard indoor bulb in an outdoor fitting unless the package says it is suitable for outdoor use. Damp locations need bulbs made for damp or wet conditions.
7. Use the right bulb for the task
A single bright bulb is not always the best choice. I use focused light for reading, cooking, sewing, or working at a desk. I use softer general light for movement through a hallway or relaxing in the living room.
Layered lighting can help. A ceiling fixture provides general light, while a desk lamp or under-cabinet light covers a specific task. This setup lets me light the area I am using rather than the whole room.
8. Review the label before buying
