Why LEDs are often the practical choice

I prefer to compare bulbs by lumens instead of watts.

  • 450 lumens can replace many 40-watt incandescent bulbs
  • 800 lumens can replace many 60-watt incandescent bulbs
  • 1,100 to 1,200 lumens can replace many 75-watt incandescent bulbs
  • About 1,600 lumens can replace many 100-watt incandescent bulbs

For kitchens, workshops, garages, and offices, 3500K to 5000K may make surfaces and details easier to see. The best option depends on the room, wall colors, task, and personal preference.

Check the color quality

Brightness is only part of the experience. Color rendering also matters.

The Color Rendering Index, or CRI, describes how naturally a light source shows colors compared with a reference source. A bulb with a CRI of 80 or higher works for many general areas. A higher CRI can be useful in kitchens, art spaces, clothing stores, makeup areas, and rooms where accurate color matters.

I avoid choosing a bulb from its package color alone. Two bulbs marked “warm white” can produce different results. I look at the color temperature, CRI, beam angle, and customer feedback when those details are available.

Make sure the bulb fits the fixture

A bulb can have the correct base and still be a poor match for the fixture.

I check these details:

  1. Base type
    Common household bases include E26 and E27. Small decorative bulbs may use E12 bases. The base must match the socket.

  2. Shape and size
    A19, BR30, PAR38, candle, tube, and globe bulbs spread light in different ways. The bulb must fit inside the shade or housing.

  3. Enclosed fixtures
    Some LED bulbs are not designed for enclosed fixtures. Heat can shorten their service life. I look for packaging that states whether the bulb is suitable for enclosed use.

  4. Outdoor use
    A bulb rated for indoor use may not be suitable for damp or wet locations. Outdoor fixtures need a bulb with the correct location rating.

  5. Dimming
    A dimmer switch and an LED bulb must be compatible. If the bulb flickers, hums, or has a narrow dimming range, the problem may come from the dimmer, the bulb, or both.

What about halogen and CFL bulbs?

Halogen bulbs can produce warm light and work with many traditional dimmers. They still use more energy than LEDs and create considerable heat. I may use one where a specific fixture requires it, but it is not my usual choice for general lighting.

Compact fluorescent lamps, often called CFLs, use less electricity than incandescent bulbs. They can work well in some spaces, yet many people dislike their warm-up time or cooler color. CFLs also contain a small amount of mercury, so they should be taken to a suitable recycling or collection point instead of being handled like ordinary household waste where local guidance says otherwise.

For a home replacing several older bulbs, LED is often the simpler option because it offers quick startup, many color choices, and broad fixture compatibility.

A real household example

Imagine a hallway with six 60-watt incandescent bulbs. If all six bulbs run for three hours each day, they use about 394 kilowatt-hours per year.

Six 9-watt LED bulbs used for the same schedule consume about 59 kilowatt-hours per year.

The estimated difference is about 335 kilowatt-hours each year. The financial result depends on the local electricity price. The hallway may also need fewer bulb changes, especially when the fixtures are high or difficult to reach.

This example does not mean every LED will last for the same period stated on its package. Heat buildup, poor ventilation, frequent switching, and unstable electrical conditions can affect performance.

A simple replacement process

I use this process when changing bulbs:

  • Read the old bulb’s shape and base information.
  • Estimate the needed brightness by lumens.
  • Select a color temperature that suits the room.
  • Check CRI when color accuracy matters.
  • Confirm dimmer, enclosure, and outdoor compatibility.
  • Compare the bulb’s size with the fixture.
  • Keep the receipt until the bulb works properly in its intended location.
